LET this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus: who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God; but made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men: and being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.
Here Saint Paul speaks to us very directly. In the Greek, φρονεῖτε, what is translated in this passage as the noun, ‘mind’, is actually a verb in the imperative mood, a command. Paul orders us to reason like Jesus, to think like Jesus, to regard our situation like Jesus, to set our minds on him, to have his attitude toward our lives and toward each other.
And I find it interesting as well as unexpected, this close connection between our faith and reason. It reminds me of a passage from Ernst Jünger’s novel, On the Marble Cliffs, this moment where the hero describes the importance of literature and reading. Finding life difficult, he and his brother, discovering themselves in the midst of great distress, they turn to books. As the hero tells us:
‘we pored over old letters and for consolation paged through treasured books in which hearts long since turned to dust still warmed our own. In the same way, the heat of earthly summers is preserved in dark veins of coal.’
In search of consolation, the hero would pour over the pages of old letters, old books. When his spirits were low, he would engage his mind—he would seek to renew his mind, to remind himself of past truths he had forgotten. The warmth of his heart and the rightness of his mind went together.
We too are much the same—paging through Paul’s letter to the Philippians and Matthew’s gospel account for consolation, for a means of warming our hearts. We might say that the heat of the Christian summer, that is the full blaze of our faith, is preserved for us in our gospel reading this morning, the dark vein of the passion of Our Lord Jesus Christ.
The Son of God, the one through whom all things were created, allows himself to be bound and led away, to be tried before a mob and unjustly condemned, to be shouted at, mocked, tortured, and finally executed. Not because he is weak or afraid, but out of obedience to God the Father.
Saint Paul encourages us to be like Christ—to have his mind, his regard not for himself but for God the Father, his humility and obedience. We pour over his example, letting his heart, a heart which has not turned to dust but continues still to beat—we let the heart of Christ Jesus warm our own. And we remind ourselves, not only of his obedience unto death, but his resurrection—his power over death.
And in this mind and with warm hearts, we pray this, our collect for this week, the Sunday Next before Easter.
ALMIGHTY and everlasting God, who, of thy tender love towards mankind, hast sent thy Son, our Saviour Jesus Christ, to take upon him our flesh, and to suffer death upon the cross, that all mankind should follow the example of his great humility: Mercifully grant, that we may both follow the example of his patience, and also be made partakers of his resurrection; through the same Jesus Christ our Lord. Then Judas who had betrayed him, when he saw that he was condemned, repented himself, and brought again the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and elders, saying, I have sinned, in that I have betrayed the innocent blood. And they said, What is that to us? see thou to that. And he cast down the pieces of silver in the temple, and departed, and went and hanged himself. And the chief priests took the silver pieces, and said, it is not lawful for to put them into the treasury, because it is the price of blood. Jesus’ nature and teachings even left John the Baptist, who believed in him as the savior, troubled by his apparently contradictory version of the Hebraic messiah, with which John had been raised. Perhaps most perplexing was the Biblical Jesus’ revolutionary teaching of non-violently offering the other cheek as the proper response to being physically assaulted by one’s enemy. The Biblical Jesus also most profoundly washed his disciples’ feet, the act clearly revealing that he took corporeal form to serve.
Followers of Islam and Judaism generally believe that Jesus did exist but was not a divine being [albeit Islam teaches that Jesus was a prophet]. After all, how could any divine being place himself/itself down to the level of humans (and even lower, by some other standards)? How could any divine being not be a physical conqueror — far less allow himself to be publicly stripped naked, severely beaten and murdered in such a belittling manner?! … Yet, for many of us, all of that makes Jesus even greater, not less divine.
Jesus may have been viciously killed because he did not in the least behave in accordance with corrupted human conduct and expectation — and in particular because he was nowhere near being the angry and sometimes even bloodthirsty behemoth so many theists seemingly wanted or needed their Creator and savior to be and therefore believed he’d have to be.
So very much of institutional 'Christianity' [i.e. that most resistant to Christ’s fundamental teachings of non-violence, compassion and non-wealth] seems to insist upon creating their Creator’s nature in their own fallible and often angry, vengeful image; for example, proclaiming at publicized protests that ‘God hates’ such-and-such group of people. Such ‘Christianity’ damages, and sometimes even ruins, the beautiful message Jesus expounded.
